I first learned about alkaline water benefits many years ago from a natural health practitioner who had a background in macrobiotics. So I am always open to finding solutions that are easier. Drinking alkaline water is certainly easy, but is it beneficial? In my experience, the problem with these products is that they create what I call an "artificial alkalinity." People can easily become too alkaline with these products, creating other problems such as bladder and kidney infections. I wouldn't say these products have no value, but I believe they should only be used periodically, if at all, and certainly not on a daily basis. In addition, I think baking soda does essentially the same thing - and it's far less expensive. Even after the baking soda phase, increasing body alkalinity by drinking alkaline water made sense to me so I continued to pursue and learn more.

Drinking spring water is a good choice. Natural spring water often contains a level of minerals that is beneficial to health. Mineral-rich water will usually have a neutral or slightly alkaline pH. Ionized water is an even better choice because the water contains ionic alkaline minerals. The ionization process makes the alkaline minerals even more bio-available to the body because of their electrical charge. Water ionizers can be expensive. But when it comes to health, I have certainly learned that an ounce of prevention is worth much more than a pound of "cure" (i.e., the cost of medical expenses). In fact, with all due respect to the medical profession, most of the time the treatments don't cure anything; they just temporarily suppress the symptoms with medications. Thus I will continue to pursue natural solutions that support the body to heal itself

Theoretical problems With Alkaline water: The main problem with the concept is that it is impossible to alter the pH of a patient's blood without causing severe health concerns. Mammalian blood contains a vast number of different pH buffers which evolved to automatically raise or lower the blood pH if a deviation occurs. These buffers heep the pH of human blood between 7.35 and 7.45. If the buffers become saturated and the pH of the blood is altered more than +/-0.4 pH, death will result. It is commonly claimed by alkaline diet proponents that cancer cells are killed in an alkaline environment, which is true, but so are almost all other cells in the human body. Proponents will attempt to disregard the above by reminding us that it is possible to alter the pH of urine by eating or drinking particular foods, which is also true, but is completely independent of the blood pH. This is based on the metabolites of certain food chemicals (referred to as "Ash") becoming concentrated in the urine. As a (healthy) bladder is an independent receptacle in the body, the pH of the fluid contained therein also has no effect on the blood pH. A different attempt at disregarding this is the claim that blood pH is balanced not by buffers but by excess acid being dumped from the blood into the cytoplasm of cells, meaning that blood pH won't reveal that your cells are dangerously acidic; needless to say, this is false..

Another clue of the ineffectiveness of an alkaline diet is that whatever food you eat will pass through your stomach. The acidity of the stomach is affected by things such as stress, amount of food eaten, or infections.
